Best (Celebrity) Voice Performances in Animated Films

This is one of my favourite lists of my Top 10 series so far because it is one of my favourite art forms. There are way more performances I love than I could fit into this list but I gave the most credit where I think its due. Sometimes a voice-over is more memorable because the actors voice is so unique and perfectly suited to the character. This gives actors with clearly distinguished voices an advantage over those without. So I tried to account for the energy and effort the actors put into the performance as well to even out the scale. Otherwise my list would consist of obvious choices like Liam Neeson, James Earl Jones, Chris Rock etc. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below. In the meantime, here are my picks for the ten most spectacular voice-overs.

1. Robin Williams as Genie

“Ten thousand years will give you such a crick in the neck!”

2. Tom Hanks as Woody

“Reach for the sky!”

3. Ellen DeGeneres as Dory

“Just keep swimming!”

4. Eddie Murphy as Donkey

“Nobody move! I’ve got a dragon and I’m not afraid to use it! I’m a donkey on the edge!”

5. John Leguizamo as Sid

“This whole ice age thing is getting old. You know what I could go for? A global warming.”

6. Steve Carell as Gru (also played Hammy the Squirrel in Over the Hedge)

“Just because everybody hates it doesn’t mean its not good.”

7. Idris Elba as Shere Khan – not technically an animation but the film was almost entirely CGI so I say it counts. (He also voices the Chief of Police in Zootopia)

“Now you will know fear.”

8. Jack Black as Po

“Legend tells of a legendary warrior whose kung fu skills were the stuff of legend.”

9. Jeremy Irons as Scar

“Oh no, Mufasa, perhaps you shouldn’t turn your back on me…”

10. Amy Poehler as Joy

“There are a lot of things to be happy about.”
